UPCOMING: A Postmodern Look at Nature, Women's Issues and Collaboration, features collaborative installation and contemporary mixed-media artwork by New Hampshire artists and friends, Gail Smuda and Laura Morrison.
Encouraged and supported by WREN's dedication to inspire artists to experiment and create new work, Smuda and Morrison collaborated over the course of several months to create an installation about the female characters in The Great Gatsby. The artists explain, "Our focus was the three women and how each of them reflects their time but each also has a timeless quality. The wife, mother, "other woman" and single woman are still with us and the idea of classes of women still holds true to some extent. The educated, the poor and the wealthy in this story come up against each other with dramatic results."
In addition to the installation, the personal work of both artists will be on display. Gail Smuda's work will feature her sculptural artist's books and mixed media fiber art pieces. Laura Morrison's artwork takes traditional fiber art techniques and gives them a new spin by creating contemporary sculpture. Her pieces are created using crochet, knitting, needle felting, beading and embroidery. Morrison talks about her nature-based sculptures.
