The New Hampshire Maple Experience

Rocks Estate Offers New Hampshire Maple Experience This Spring Bethlehem, N.H.Enjoy the New Hampshire Maple Experience at The Rocks Estate this spring. From tapping trees and learning how maple syrup is made to horse-drawn wagon rides and tasty treats, the Maple Experience program is a Rocks favorite. The Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests, which owns the 1,400-acre Rocks Estate, partners each spring with area inns and other businesses to unveil the sweet mystery of New Hampshires delectable maple syrup and provide hands-on learning. Illustrating what we have to offer north of the Notch is always on our minds at The Rocks, said Nigel Manley, longtime Rocks Estate manager. The idea of the Maple Experience is to collaborate with other area businesses to provide fun and education for families and visitors of all ages. Maple Experience participants will learn how to identify the sugar maple trees that produce the sweet sap for making syrup, discover the history of maple sugaring, and see part of the process demonstrated. Fourth-generation sugarer Brad Presby will demonstrate the modern technique for sugaring in the newly restored Sawmill/Pigpen building at The Rocks. The turn-of-the-century building has been renovated to serve as a sugar house and year-round maple education center featuring maple sugaring artifacts from the extensive collection of the late Charlie Stewart, a legendary sugar maker from nearby Sugar Hill. In continuing with its tradition of partnering with area businesses, the Rocks has again teamed up with the famous Pollys Pancake Parlor in nearby Sugar Hill to offer a tasty twist to the popular sugaring program. The Parlor will offer an abbreviated menu at The Rocks from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on some days of The New Hampshire Maple Experience. We are so pleased to be able to team up with the Rocks again this season, said Kathie Cote, co-owner of Pollys. This is a natural fit that will add to the visitors experience at this years maple program. Pollys waffle and pancake mixes will be available for sale again this season. For those looking to turn the Maple Experience into a weekend-long North Country stay, The Rocks collaborates with local inns to offer weekend vacation packages. Visit www.therocks.org/vacations.php to find participating lodging establishments. The New Hampshire Maple Experience is scheduled for March 13, 20, 21, 27, 28 and April 3, with tours taking place throughout the day. Reservations are required but walk-ins are welcomed on a space available basis. For more information, please visit www.therocks.org. For reservations and other inquiries e-mail info@therocks.org or call 603-444-6228. The Rocks is the North Country Conservation and Education Center of the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests (www.forestsociety.org). Nigel Manley

HAVE YOU HEARD THE NOISES FROM THE POOLS THIS SPRING? BETHLEHEM, N.H.Have you ever wondered whats making all that noise in the spring pools as the days get warmer? Come to The Rocks Estate April 21, where Dave Anderson, Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests Director of Education, will explore the wonderful world of vernal ponds. The free workshop begins at 7 p.m. As the spring days grow warmer, new life begins in the forest. Vernal pools come alive as wood frogs and mole salamanders re-emerge from the ground to migrate and breed in their natal vernal pools. Workshop participants will learn how to identify vernal pool species by sight, sound, and habitat. Theyll also learn about the unique role amphibians play in forested ecosystems and how to locate and protect woodland vernal pools. This popular annual workshop will include an opportunity to see live amphibians and their eggs. Anderson has worked for the Forest Society for more than 18 years. He is responsible for the design and delivery of conservation education programs including field trips, tours and presentations to Forest Society members, conservation partners and the general public. Anderson is perhaps best known as a working naturalist (he prefers “dirt naturalist who guides group field trips on conservation land statewide while teaching about forest ecology, wildlife ecology, forest stewardship and land conservation initiatives to introduce both life-long residents and visitors alike to protection and management of New Hampshire forests, farms and open space. Wild Turkey Program
Wednesday, April 28th, 2010
Nigel Manley
info@therocks.org

Discover How Turkeys Got Their Name, Where They Sleep and Why They Gobble Bethlehem, N.H. If youve ever wondered how turkeys got their name, where they sleep, or why they gobble, join the Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests staff member and wild life enthusiast Nigel Manley and Coreys Sport Shop at the Rocks Estate on April 28 at 7:00 p.m. Wild turkeys were extirpated in several states, including New Hampshire, in the early 1900s. Following a huge conservation effort, the species has bounced back with great success. Manley will lead program participants through the discovery of the wild turkey, how it got its name and how it became domesticated. This program is for everyone who is interested in these magnificent birds, be it for watching or hunting. “When I hear the gobbling of the turkey, it reminds me of watching the show “The Waltons while growing up in the United Kingdom,” Manley said. Growing up in Britain I could only imagine being able to go into the woods and see as well as hunt the different species, including turkeys, that we have in New Hampshire. Manley, a wildlife enthusiast and the manager of the Rocks Estate, has worked for the Forest Society for over 20 years. He spends as much time in the woods as possible. Spring, when turkeys begin their annual courtship in the wild, is his favorite time of year. Wild turkeys range from the fields of New Hampshire, across the United States, and into Mexico. Ben Franklin wanted the wild turkey to be the national symbol. Manley will share more turkey facts during the program, as well as invite participants to touch turkey feathers and spurs, and to hear the noises that turkeys make while feeding, fighting and relaxing. Calling wild turkeys can be fun for hunters, bird watchers and photographers alike. Participants are invited to bring their favorite call and demonstrate it to the audience or to learn how to use a turkey call.
